Israel Atona-Varela , Shykera Bordley , Daria Brandt-Moses , and Delaney Mitchell ( P ) Past and Present Risk Factors and Trauma in the Transgender Population : A Qualitative Exploration Transgender ( TGE ) individuals remain one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized groups amongst the LGBT population . Results from our qualitative analysis on self- reported lived experiences illustrate that TGE individuals report a high number of adverse childhood events , including violence , physical abuse , substance abuse , neglect , and homelessness ; which were mediated by social support and societal acceptance . Additional risk factors and adverse present outcomes were further elucidated . Data reveal the complexities of lived experiences of TGE , highlighting the need for Social Workers to be prepared to address the myriad psychosocial , financial , and health challenges TGE individuals and families face .
