10:10 for Youth Leaders Guide Sample | Page 8

Welcome

5 minutes
Section Aim
To welcome everyone to 10:10 , to introduce yourself as the facilitator , and for the young people to introduce themselves .
Instructions
Depending on the location , time constraints , group size and whether the young people are known to you or not , introduce yourself and take time to break the ice in a style that suits the group .
If you are facilitating a larger group you have never met or a whole class , you will most likely only have time to introduce yourself . If you don ’ t know the participants , it may help to give each young person a sticker and ask them to write their name and put it on .
Below are some ideas that only take a few minutes each for your participants to get to know you and for you to get to know them .
True or False About Me ( For the group to get to know you ) This activity will require you to come up with some true and false statements about yourself in advance of the session . Start by introducing yourself and then proceed to tell them a few facts about yourself , most of which are true and one that is false . Ask the group to decide which is false .
example : The author of 10:10 would say the following 1 . I once starred on itv in a documentary about homelessness
2 . Before the age of 6 I had broken my leg , arm and nose in three different accidents 3 . I can speak three languages 4 . I have never had any points on my license . ( Just in case you want to know number 3 is false )
My Life Pictures ( For the group to get to know you ) This activity will require you to create a montage of pictures on a Powerpoint that you can use to introduce yourself . It could be a picture of the place you live , your family , favourite food , sports team , things you love or hate , something from your bucket list .
Which one is it ( For you to get to know a small group ) Ask each member of the group to introduce themselves . Here are some ideas of how :
• Ask them to tell you one thing about themselves ( true or false ) and you as the leader have to guess which it is .
• Ask them a question like “ If you could eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be ?”
• Get them to draw in 30 seconds one picture that they could use to describe one thing about them . Go around the group with each person saying their name and answering the question or describing the picture in turn .
