01 — Finding Happiness
ED could be described as discovering how to flourish and live a life of meaning rather than just seeking pleasure . This is sometimes known as the good life , where you develop your life to its full potential . It is more about how you live than what you have ; more about what is happening on the inside than how we present ourselves at the superficial level . Happiness is therefore not the goal so much as the outcome of particular ways of living .
ED & HD in Practice
It would be reasonable to suggest that the experiences that make up HD are probably easier and more desirable to obtain than those associated with ED . This is mainly because the pursuits associated with ED take more effort and the benefits are not always felt immediately . When compared to the quick wins and attractiveness of HD , this explains why ED is often undervalued and not always considered .
Both ED and HD have important life experiences to offer , but research has shown that ED provides more elevating experiences than HD , such as awe , inspiration , and a sense of meaning . However , when the two concepts are combined in appropriate ways , the most and longest-lasting benefits are experienced .
It is consequently an important part of 10:10 to help children understand that happiness isn ’ t always easy to obtain , that HD ( just doing things for enjoyment and pleasure ) has a limited impact and that ED ( living life well by expressing things like Kindness and thankfulness ) has something to offer them . There is no need to be prescriptive as to which HD and ED practices they should adopt in their lives , or try to teach children the terms , but rather to help them to learn what is understood to support happiness and encourage them to explore the ideas for themselves .
