The 2026 season feels almost like a new era in WorldSBK, so, in the opinion of some top competitors, who was the best of the best? The best champion, what was the best overall era- and what is each rider’ s personal high point so far?

Maybe it is very appropriate for this year’ s almost endlessly victorious rider, Nicolo Bulega, to speak about who he thinks is the greatest ever WorldSBK Champion. And even more appropriate for him to do it at an Italian circuit.
“ The number one ever is Troy Bayliss,” said Bulega, quite definitively.“ It’ s because he was the true essence of motorcycling: heart, throttle, and zero complex electronics. He made history with Ducati and came back to win at Portimão in 2008 with a busted hand. That’ s pure legend.”
Having created an era all of his own in the first two-thirds of this season, what is Bulega’ s personal favourite era in WorldSBK overall?
“ I think every era has its own peculiarities,” said a very fairminded Nicolo.“ Probably the most memorable era was in the 2000s. It was the peak of WorldSBK thanks to a battle among many manufacturers- Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki- and many riders such as Bayliss, Edwards, and Haga. There were spectacular last-lap duels in front of grandstands full of fans.[ Salto de ajuste de texto ] There have been so many personal highlights for Bulega in his WorldSSP / WorldSBK already, but as we asked him for his best memory in this paddock so far, he went to something very personal to him.“ My best memory of the season is the victory in Australia on Sunday in wet conditions,” said Nicolo.“ I had been very strong first in testing and then throughout the weekend in the dry. When it started raining on Sunday, I was worried it might become a limitation, but instead I found myself being fast even in the rain.”

Forse è particolarmente appropriato che proprio il pilota dominatore di questa stagione, Nicolò Bulega, esprima la sua opinione su chi ritiene sia il più grande campione della storia del WorldSBK. E ancora di più che lo faccia su un circuito italiano.
« Il numero uno di sempre è Troy Bayliss », afferma Bulega senza esitazioni. « Perché rappresentava la vera essenza del motociclismo: cuore, gas e zero elettronica complessa. Ha scritto la storia con Ducati ed è tornato a vincere a Portimão nel 2008 con una mano fratturata. Questa è una leggenda autentica.»
Dopo aver dato vita a un’ era tutta sua nei primi due terzi di questa stagione, qual è invece l’ epoca preferita di Bulega nella storia del WorldSBK?
« Penso che ogni periodo abbia avuto le proprie caratteristiche », risponde con equilibrio Nicolò. « Probabilmente gli anni Duemila sono stati i più memorabili. È stato il momento di massimo splendore del WorldSBK, grazie alla sfida tra numerosi costruttori – Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki e Kawasaki – e piloti come Bayliss, Edwards e Haga. C’ erano duelli spettacolari fino all’ ultima curva davanti a tribune gremite di appassionati.» Bulega ha già collezionato molti momenti importanti tra WorldSSP e WorldSBK, ma quando gli viene chiesto quale sia il suo ricordo più bello nel paddock sceglie un episodio molto personale. « Il ricordo più bello della stagione è la vittoria della domenica in Australia, ottenuta sul bagnato », racconta Nicolò. « Nei test e per tutto il weekend ero stato molto veloce sull’ asciutto. Quando domenica ha iniziato a piovere temevo che per me potesse rivelarsi un limite, mentre invece sono riuscito a essere competitivo anche sotto la pioggia.»
