for an hour. The land owner’s response to their unhappiness was simply a response
not based upon good economics, but simply mercy. He says in verse 15, “Do I not
have the right to be merciful to whom I would show mercy?” This action of “doing
good” is totally at the discretion of the one who wants to do it, and has nothing to do
with how much we receive from those for whom we do it.
I am fully aware of the challenges that this philosophy brings to our lives and would
not want to over simplify its implications. But this I know, that God has commanded
us, who have received grace, to show mercy to those around us; even when it goes
against the prevailing wisdom of the day and even against, sometimes, our c
