Genesis 13
Our reading today highlights for us that Meekness (Power under control) can be seen in
the great patriarch, Abraham.
Abraham had, under the instruction of God, left where he was and was on a journey to
the place where God would show him, i.e. the Promised Land. His nephew Lot, however,
tagged along with him. Lot, like Abraham, was a man of means and he too had many
sheep. The shepherds of Abraham and Lot began to quarrel, which led to the point
where a decision needed to be made. Abraham spoke to Lot and said,“We have to
separate. You have the choice; you can either choose to take yoursheep to the fertile
valley, or you can move your sheep into the dry wilderness, YOU CHOOSE.” The sign of
a meek person is the sign of somebody who doesn’t have to get their own way all the
time. Meek people are able to, in tough times, when tough decisions need to be made,
say the words, YOU CHOOSE….
Abraham knew that whichever way he went, whether into the fertile valley or into the
desert, he could trust God completely. His decisions and his choices, he knew, were not
as important as some would make them out to be, because he knew that wherever he
went God’s presence would lead him, protect him and provide for him.
This characteristic is true of meek people. They do not get hung-up over technical
decisions in life. They do not break relationships over technicalities. They are able to
trust God no matter how complicated life may present itself to be.
We all know that the choices we make, make us, but at some stages in our lives we have
to honour the choices other people make, even when we know it is the wrong choice.
Sometimes, in the context of the church, I see this happening, where I see people, who
generally know better, make choices that are self-protective and are not made within
anyone else’s consideration in mind. The first great measure of someone who is meek is
his ability to want the best for somebody else, even when it may cost him something. I
