1 - Introduction - Living like a real Christian MEEKNESS | Page 10
this last week’s devotions understood, the truth of the Sovereignty of God. Job would not
question God over his sad situation, but simply allowed God to be God.
Jesus evidenced so much of the same power, that onthat awful night of His betrayal, trial
and crucifixion, He showed incredible power over Himself. Not only was He a great
example of “power under control”, but He was also a great example of “power while
things are out of control”. When Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate, Pilate thought that he
had the power, how wrong he was. If he had only known who it was that was standing
before him, he would have realised that he was just a pawn in the hands of a Sovereign
God. When Jesus cried in the Garden of Gethsemane, “Let your will be done.” He was
submitting Himself in total meekness to the Sovereignty of God and the plan for which
God had previously ordained. That, people, is meekness of the highest order!
Many people that I know live in less than ideal circumstances. Some of these people fall
apart and lose control over their attitudes, their words and their actions. There are,
however, a handful who retain control over themselves, despite the unhappy
circumstances surrounding them. These people all have one thing in common; they have
submitted themselves to God in such a way that they relinquish control over their
circumstances, but retain very clearly, their self-control. Meekness should, I believe, be a
characteristic of all Christians. I remind you, however, that it is not the result of positive
thinking or stronger will-power, but it comes as a result of the realised presence of the
Holy Spirit in one’s life.
Won’t you take a mental journey through the Bible stories that you know and look for
further examples that illustrate our thesis for today. You will find that the principle that
we have spoken of, as seen in Jesus’ life and Job’s life, are evidenced in many others and
then recognise too, again, your personal inability to pull it off on your own. Do not be
afraid to declare your dependence upon God, draw your strength from Him and release
yourself from the temptation to always be in control, and allow His presence within you
to make all the difference.
Prayer Thought: Today would be a good day for you, in your prayer time, to just sit
quietly and allow your mind to revisit all the incidents in this past month that have made
you feel out of control. Confess these to God and then re-envision yourself as to what those
situations would have looked like should you have evidenced, more strongly, the fruit of
meekness. Allow God’s Spirit then to encourage you and to re-inspire you to live a life that
would evidence more categorically the meekness of Christ.
