To God, being good is far more than just being nice; being good, according to
Genesis 1, means serving its purpose. In the process of creation, God made certain
things and as they served their purpose, God declared that they were good. The
reason that God declared the sun to be “good”was not because it looked nice, but
because it shone and fulfilled God’s purpose. The reason that God declared the
animals to be good was not just because they were nice to look at, but because
they too fulfilled the purpose for which God had established them. So in order for
us to rekindle the meaning of good, we need to associate it with the very purpose
of God. In Matthew 25 Jesus told the parable of the Good Servant. After the
master had given his three servants talents and instructing them to invest their
talents, he found that two of the servants had done well, whereas the other
servant had failed the test. The two servants who had done well he declared them
to be good and faithful, the reason that they were declared good was because
they served their purpose; they took some risks and they made a profit. In order
for us to be declared “good” by God, we may need to do the same. Being good,
therefore is not just about not being “bad”, but about fulfilling the purpose for
which God has created us.
Prayer Thought: won’t you take some time today to review the whole issue of
God’s purpose for your life. Bear in mind that God’s purpose for your life has
probably not got much to do with your career (because that is what you do to
make money), but God’s purpose for your life is far more than that. God’s purpose
for your life is that you should know Him better, glorify Him more and serve with
every ounce of passion within you for the cause of the Kingdom of God. Won’t you
pray into this thought today revelling in the fact that God does have a purpose for
you and that, in your journey of knowing God better, this purpose will be most
gloriously fulfilled. (If you have any doubt as to what I am talking about I would

unturned in establishing what it means to fulfil the purpose of God).
