There are many who sit on the side lines of the Christian experience today
for this very reason. They have been disappointed by the people of the
church which has led them to a place of disillusionment in the church. Let
me share two examples with you.
In the book of Acts we have the story of Mark accompanying Paul on a
missionary journey. This journey into Asia Minor proved to be dangerous
and hard going and there was a point where Mark left Paul because he
could not take the pressure. Paul returned after his mission journey and
was not very complimentary about young Mark. Mark, it would appear,
drifted into the background and for a while became a spectator to the
exciting development of the first century church. We read later on that
Barnabas, who had the gift of encouragement, drew alongside Mark and
encouraged him to get over his hurt and to get back into the game. Mark
did that and, as a result, we today have the gospel of Mark, which this
young man wrote. Furthermore Mark partnered with Barnabas on his own
mission trips and continued to play the game well, until the day he was
martyred.
A second example of this is found in our reading today, where Elijah, after
having a great victory on Mount Carmel, found himself in a cave, feeling
