1 - Introduction - Living like a real Christian Feed My Sheep | Page 7

Jesus does not say to his disciples, “pray for them” because that, in this context, would be a cop-out, but Jesus tells them emphatically to feed them. Back in the book of Genesis 4 we have a cry that many people in the church today would turn to. It is the cry of Cain, where Cain asked of God, “…am I my brother’s keeper?” In the account, God does not even bother to answer his question indicating that apparently we are our brother’s keepers. This command of Christ is simply something that will challenge our obedience in this area. It is a command not a suggestion. Some of you who read this will be called to a more strategic answer to the hunger problem. There are some amongst us who network organisations to fulfil this command. There are organisations within our midst, like 2Tunics, Rehoboth and Genesis, who seek to address the issues of hunger on a far larger scale. And even as they do this, no matter how successful they are, it never takes away from our personal responsibility to participate and be obedient to this command. Prayer Thought: I trust that we as a congregation will all respond personally in obedience to the command of Christ to “…you feed them…” and that to those organisations in our midst who seek on a larger scale to fulfil this command, that we will support them and do everything we can to help them do what they can to meet the challenge. Won’t youpray for these organisations as God brings them to mind and then let’s go out and express our personal obedience to the command. Friday 2 Kings 7 Matthew 21 v 28 – 32 Today let’s contemplate THE MOTIVES that we find in Scripture for people to respond to the command to “…you feed them…” As I read the Bible I notice that there are four different motives for responding to the command. 1. Your conscience – this is a God-given sense of what is right and wrong. In 2 Kings 7 we have the story of the four lepers who found themselves in a most unique situation surrounded by food and all that they needed to sustain themselves in luxury, but in verse 9 we read how one of these lepers declared “…we are not doing what is right…” This led them to respond by sharing the good news and the food
