“ We took the original facility ’ s dorms and classrooms and made it all an academic center ,” Campion said . “ We ’ re training 300 nurses at a time and graduating approximately 50 per year who will then go back to their villages and towns to treat malaria and other tropical diseases in areas where there often are no clinics or dispensaries .”
And now , with the advent of technology , Campion said virtual training has become a reality in Egbe . Previously , the cellular service in the area was spotty , and coverage was not good enough to be able to do something like a Zoom call . But when the Nigerian government saw what Campion and his team had built in Egbe , it installed a tower and updated the cellular service to a digital system . Now “ you can Zoom flawlessly there .”
Solar power is continually being expanded , as well , to ensure the complex is less dependent on the country ’ s poor power grid and can avoid the ever-increasing cost of diesel fuel for the generators .
