So Campion set a five-year plan in motion , sending in construction supplies , hiring a construction manager , and finding volunteers in North America who would join the effort .
“ We needed plumbers , electricians , and more ,” Campion said . “ Samaritan ’ s Purse got very excited about the project and went to their database to find construction volunteers .”
Campion said there was very little skilled labor in the region , and there certainly weren ’ t enough masons , plumbers , and electricians to get the work done . So craftsmen from North America would head to Egbe for two to three weeks at a time to do the work but also to train villagers who wanted to learn a specific trade .
“ We were revitalizing old buildings and constructing new buildings , and the program worked very well ,” Campion said . “ Samaritan ’ s Purse ended up giving us 3 years of backing . By then , more donors had come online and we had tremendous momentum .”
The project started in 2011 , and there are now 60 buildings on a 50-acre property serving half a million people with emergency medical services and routine medical care . The project also entailed rebuilding the water supply system , including the water reservoir and purification filters . New diesel generators and solar power were installed .
Eighteen houses were restored , and four new houses were built on the compound for Nigerian and missionary medical professionals to have a place to stay . Hospital buildings , operating rooms , a pediatric ward , a dental clinic , a physical therapy department , and an HIV center were all created in Egbe .
About 20 acres of that property originally had a nursing school and midwifery . In 2018 , Campion ’ s team revitalized that , too . They also built a new 10-acre residency complex with dormitories , a dining hall , and an administration building to house and teach 300 students .
