HIDDEN FROM VIEW

Create an exploded diagram of the Titanic !
Did you enjoy our nautical adventure into all things Titanic in the September issue of AQUILA magazine ? Do you still want MORE Titanic knowledge and fun ? Course you do ! Have a go at this drawing activity to explore the ship in all its former glory .
The iceberg that caused such a catastrophic end to the RMS Titanic proved to be highly dangerous because so much of it was hidden from sight . In many ways there are similarities with the appearance of the giant ship itself . All the observers could see , looking at the outside of the Titanic , were row upon row of freshly painted metal plates riveted together . Behind that though , above and below the waterline , was the beating heart of the vessel – a series of decks and levels packed with accommodation , function rooms and facilities .

Polly ’ s Mission

You have been provided with what is known as an exploded diagram of the Titanic , that is a drawing of the ship with the metal plates taken away so that you can actually see what is situated on each of the decks / levels . Each of these is identified using a colour-coded system on the chart which is given .
One thing you should notice is that the ‘ inners ’ of the vessel is organised very much in a top-down and front-back format . The wealthier you were ( first class ) the closer to the upper deck you were based and usually the nearer to the front . Whereas third class passengers had their facilities lower down and more towards the back or stern . Many were in what was called steerage accommodation right at the back just inside where the rudder and the propellers were . Imagine how noisy that must have been ? o

Check the copy of the exploded diagram provided to see how it works . If possible , enlarge the diagram or draw a larger copy of it yourself . The bigger the diagram , the more detail you will be able to show . Remember to include all the levels .
STEP 1 :
Use the simplified details from the chart provided to fill in the exploded diagram . Use the colours suggested so that each level is clear to see . You may decide on your own choice though .

TOP TIP
If you make your own diagram of the ship it needs to be symmetrical . Take a sheet of thin card . Fold it down the middle . Draw one half of the hull of the ship away from the fold . Open out the card and cut out the shape carefully . You now have a template to draw round on paper .
