O ’ Leary ’ s students may seek employment directly out of high school as paraeducators or instructional aides , among other roles , but many students also move on to post-secondary education and teaching credentials .

“ This class gives them an idea of what a teacher ’ s responsibilities are , including classroom management , lesson planning and student observation ,” O ’ Leary says . “ In fact , the students are required to actually write eight lesson plans in a school year and do two observation reports based on a student ’ s growth and development .”

In the quest to make a teaching career more accessible , the Sacramento County Office of Education fast-tracks the credentialing process through their Teacher Intern Program . This intensive two-year program provides recent graduates and professionals from other fields a non-traditional route into teaching that includes coursework for singlesubject math or science , multiple subject , or Mild to Moderate Support Needs teaching candidates .

Unlike traditional credentialing routes , the SCOE program enables interns to be hired as full-time , paid classroom teachers who are not supervised by a master teacher . Interns are not student teachers as in conventional programs , and their credential coursework is concurrent with their paid teaching positions . Interns receive multiple avenues of support , including mentorship and coaching throughout the program .

The El Dorado County Office of Education has also been examining effective ways to recruit talented educators .

“ Together with Alder Graduate School of Education , we initiated our county ’ s first-ever teacher residency program with the goal of recruiting and educating local teacher candidates in a one-year residency program in a local school district or EDCOE classroom ,” superintendent Manansala says .

After completing the program , residents will have apprenticed alongside El Dorado County ’ s most skillful educators and earned a teaching credential and master ’ s degree . “ This innovative program will establish a pipeline of expert teachers and assist us in building one of the finest educational systems in California ,” Manansala says .
