For nearly a decade , Edmundo Castañeda has served as president and CEO of Dignity Health ’ s Mercy General Hospital . In 2020 , his leadership role expanded and he became president and CEO of Woodland Memorial Hospital as well . With an extensive background in hospital administration and executive leadership , Castañeda came to the Sacramento region with a strong desire to work for a nonprofit , faith-based health system .

“ I am so proud to be a part of this community and to work for an organization that provides high-quality , compassionate and affordable patientcentered care ,” Castañeda says .
He is particularly proud of Mercy General Hospital ’ s world-class cardiovascular services . Mercy General has been rated as a premier health care destination in California and recognized by Healthgrades as one of America ’ s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiovascular Surgery . Castañeda says the volume of cardiac patients they treat is higher than any other hospital provider in Northern California .

operating on patients with advanced heart failure and implanting Left Ventricular Assist Devices , our procedures can help dramatically restore patients ’ quality of life .”
Castañeda shares that Woodland Memorial Hospital , like Mercy General , has a long-standing legacy in the community . In Woodland , hospital leadership and staff have been working tirelessly to provide critical access for the most vulnerable communities to receive COVID-19 testing and vaccines . “ COVID-19 has really magnified the disparities in our communities and healthcare system ,” he says . “ We saw an opportunity to help the underserved and deployed a team of leaders , staff and medical providers that took vaccines to the street .”
“ We are a mission-driven organization ,” Castañeda continues . “ Without the hard work of our incredible team , many of those vaccinated would not have otherwise had access . The work we do throughout the Sacramento region is not only rewarding , but for the common good . As a Latinx leader , it is important to me that we strive toward a reality where all community members enjoy a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible — true health equity .”
