The 2026 season feels almost like a new era in WorldSBK, so, in the opinion of some top competitors, who was the best of the best? The best champion, the best overall era- and what is each rider’ s personal high point so far?

In relative terms, Baldassarri blitzed the start of the 2026 season, taking third place at the opening round in Australia. He has continued to be one of the best Independent Riders this season. For him, the best ever WorldSBK champion was not one of a recent vintage.
“ I think it was Troy Bayliss,” said Lorenzo.“ He is an idol for me; he won three championships, and he was one of the few riders that could also win a MotoGP race. Troy was a great inspiration for me- he came into WorldSBK without many expectations and he was able to dominate the championship. His riding style and his character inside the paddock were really amazing!”
It’ s no surprise then that Balda’ s favourite era also straddles the Bayliss years.
“ As Troy Bayliss was my favourite WorldSBK rider, I think the Golden Era was the Bayliss-Edwards duels. In 2001-2002. The tracks were full of spectators, and the race action between them was unbelievable. I think they created something iconic that we will remember for ages.”
We are back to another Australian legend- Phillip Island- for Lorenzo’ s best ever personal moment or memory inside the WorldSBK paddock.“ It is for sure the podium at PI this year. It was my first in WorldSBK, at the absolute debut together with the GoEleven Team and Ducati. After my first WorldSBK year in 2023, that was quite difficult, it was a nice comeback for me, a sort of redemption. Phillip Island was so special as I had my first Moto2 podium there too.”

Toutes proportions gardées, Baldassarri a réussi un début de saison 2026 tonitruant, avec une troisième place dès le Round d’ ouverture en Australie. Il figure depuis parmi les meilleurs pilotes indépendants. Pour lui, le plus grand Champion de l’ histoire du WorldSBK n’ appartient pas à la génération récente.
« Je pense que c’ était Troy Bayliss, confie Lorenzo. C’ est une idole pour moi. Il a remporté trois titres et il faisait partie des rares pilotes capables de gagner aussi une course de MotoGP. Troy a été une grande source d’ inspiration: il est arrivé en WorldSBK sans grandes attentes et il a réussi à dominer le Championnat. Son style de pilotage et son personnage dans le paddock étaient vraiment incroyables! »
Sans surprise, l’ époque préférée de « Balda » recoupe les années Bayliss. « Comme Troy Bayliss était mon pilote WorldSBK préféré, je pense que l’ âge d’ or, ce sont les duels Bayliss-Edwards, en 2001-2002, poursuit-il. Les circuits étaient pleins de spectateurs et la bagarre en piste entre les deux était incroyable. Je crois qu’ ils ont créé quelque chose d’ iconique dont on se souviendra très longtemps. »
Retour à une autre légende australienne, Phillip Island, pour le plus beau souvenir personnel de Lorenzo dans le paddock WorldSBK. « C’ est à coup sûr le podium de Phillip Island cette année, sourit l’ Italien. C’ était mon premier en WorldSBK, pour mes tout premiers pas avec le Team Go Eleven et Ducati. Après ma première année en WorldSBK, en 2023, qui avait été assez difficile, c’ était un joli retour, une forme de revanche. Phillip Island est un endroit très spécial pour moi: j’ y avais aussi signé mon premier podium en Moto2. »
