What projects are you currently working on ? We just wrapped up the site work on a 12-acre mini-storage facility in Reno . We are currently working on various pavement maintenance contracts with the County of Sacramento along with site improvements at a refuse transfer station . This summer we will be performing surface improvement projects at various public schools .

What obstacles are you facing at the moment ? The largest challenge has been a retiring , aging workforce coupled with the inability to attract and retain skilled laborers , equipment operators , cement workers and Class A drivers . … The challenge can ’ t be overcome unless California and the nation changes or abandons the way construction trades in public works are regulated . Right now , state rules and regulations are established for training young people who are needed in the construction trades by de facto union rules and regulations . If , for instance , I needed to hire workers for a school contract , I would need to hire a person who has been through a state-approved apprenticeship program . … We have created an artificial bottleneck that is not creating a much-needed workforce . … We need to be free to hire young people any way we can . … In order to entice them and keep them , we have to be creative with compensation programs and do our darnedest to keep them gainfully employed ! Highly portable 401K retirement savings , safety bonuses , production bonuses — these are the things that may bring in more young people to get their hands dirty …
