Campus construction seeks to modernize and expand educational offerings
By JENNIFER VON GELDERN
Many educational facilities throughout California , particularly in the Sacramento region , need modernization or replacement . Schools built in the 1950s , ’ 60s and ’ 70s are well past their useful lifespans , so regional design and construction teams are planning , building and improving campuses , from elementary schools to colleges .
“ Luckily , since about 2014 , we have had a record number of local general obligation bonds pass ,” says Brian Whitmore , president and CEO of Studio W Architects . “ That ’ s the primary funding mechanism for public education projects , and a state bond ( Proposition 51 ) passed in 2016 . This has funded construction through the past decade and while the funding stream is slowing , we still have numerous districts regionally and statewide considering passing local bonds in 2022 or 2024 .”
