upgrades while preserving the building ’ s historical character .
“ Right now , we ’ re doing due diligence and research on what needs to be preserved ,” Blomquist says . “ It ’ s a special building . It ’ s the first state office building and I like the cool factor .” He expects the project to be completed by about 2025 . Ken Turton , president of Turton Commercial Real Estate , believes that the renovation of older and often empty office buildings will bring new life to the Sacramento urban core . One of Turton ’ s flagship projects is the renovation of the historic Weinstock ’ s building just one block from the State Capitol on K Street . Originally constructed in 1924 as a department store , the 168,000-squarefoot building had sat empty for years after being converted into an office building . In addition to upgrades , the building is now topped by two additional floors with a wrap-around terrace .

Infrastructure Projects Support Population Growth The Capital Region ’ s population has nearly doubled in the last few decades and that growth has required a doubling down on major road and water treatment projects to keep up .
The region ’ s largest road construction project , known as the Fix50 Highway Enhancement Project , is ongoing , with construction crews widening lanes and raising overpasses on a 10-mile section of Highway 50 from Interstate 5 to Watt Avenue . The $ 433 million project , managed by Flatiron Construction , will also expand Sacramento Regional Transit District ’ s light rail service between Sunrise Boulevard and downtown Folsom and is scheduled for completion by early 2025 .
Work is also continuing on the Capital SouthEast Connector Project , a 34-mile expressway that will connect the southern area of Sacramento County to El Dorado County through the cities of Elk Grove , Rancho Cordova and Folsom . The project includes 12 separate sections to be completed as funding becomes available , but a new interchange at Kammerer Road in Elk Grove and various other sub-projects have been completed along the route by general contractors Goodfellow Bros . and George Reed .
One of the biggest public works projects in the area ’ s history — renovation of the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove — is nearing completion as officials race to meet new water quality standards by 2023 . Known as the EchoWater Project , the $ 1.7 billion upgrade of the region ’ s water treatment plant covers 3,550 acres and will reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in drinking water for 1.4 million people and improve the quality of water discharged into the Sacramento River .
The project includes 20 separate construction projects and has involved many contractors , including Brown and Caldwell ( BC ) and Teichert Construction , among others .
