The partnership uses community-based strategies to increase COVID-19 vaccination and testing among Latino and African American populations . With FEMA funding support arranged through the California Department of Public Health Office of Health Equity , it harnesses and expands upon UC Davis Health collaborations with nonprofit community-based organizations such as the Health Education Council , Lideres Campesinas , California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation and RISE Inc .; faith communities such as City Church of Sacramento and Sacramento Black Media Coalition ; and government partners like Sacramento and Yolo Counties ’ Departments of Public Health , Sacramento City Unified School District and the Mexican Consulate to help increase vaccine equity in these populations .
“ Many of our MOVE IT UP partners — grassroots organizations — have worked in these communities for decades and have long track records of success ,” says Dr . Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola , director of the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities . “ The people our program is focused on have incredible trust in these communitybased organizations and without that trust , we would not have the traction and great outcomes we have .”
Since officially launching on Dec . 4 , 2021 , the MOVE IT UP team has administered more than 2,000 COVID-19 vaccines . By partnering on this outreach effort and with FQHCs , UC Davis Health is improving the health and lives of underserved populations throughout the region .
