Het seizoen 2026 voelt bijna als een nieuw tijdperk in het WorldSBK. Wie was volgens enkele topcoureurs de beste van het beste in het WorldSBK? De beste kampioenen, het beste tijdperk in het algemeen en wat is tot nu toe het persoonlijke hoogtepunt van elke coureur?
ALVARO BAUTISTA Barni Spark Racing Team
A three-time World Champion, with two of them in WorldSBK, Alvaro is already a legend in WorldSBK, and one of the statistically best riders of all time. He spent so, so many years in the MotoGP™ paddock, of course, but entering his seventh in WorldSBK now, he said,“ On paper, I think Jonathan Rea has won a lot,” said Bautista.“ But, in the history of Superbike, it is difficult to choose one. I think for me, the first rider that came to my mind is Carl Fogarty. But, in different moments …?”
And the best era? Alvaro has no hesitation this time,“ The best era? The titanic trio- Rea, Toprak, and me. I think in’ 22 it was very nice, and then in’ 23 the battles with Toprak were also very good.”
After so much success, Bautista has many moments to look back on as his personal favourites. While speaking to us at Phillip Island, in the first round of the 2026 season, he remembered his first ever WorldSBK races, at that very venue.“ I think the first hat-trick I won here was really good, because nobody bet that I could win all three,” said Alvaro.“ Especially after the tests when I was fast, but not super-fast. Think nobody expected me to win the first three races in a row- and then 11 in a row. That first moment was very special- and it had been such a long, long time since I had won a race. To recover that feeling to win was very special.”
Alvaro is drievoudig wereldkampioen, waarvan twee keer in het WorldSBK, en is nu al een legende in het WorldSBK en statistisch gezien een van de beste coureurs aller tijden. Hij heeft natuurlijk heel veel jaren in de MotoGP™-paddock doorgebracht, maar nu hij aan zijn zevende seizoen in het WorldSBK begint, zegt hij:“ Op papier heeft Jonathan Rea volgens mij veel gewonnen”, aldus Bautista.“ Maar in de geschiedenis van Superbike is het moeilijk om er één te kiezen. Ik denk dat Carl Fogarty de eerste rijder is die in mij opkomt. Maar op verschillende momenten...?”
En het beste tijdperk? Alvaro aarzelt deze keer niet:“ Het beste tijdperk? Het titanische trio: Rea, Toprak en ik. Ik denk dat het in‘ 22 erg leuk was en in‘ 23 waren de gevechten met Toprak ook erg goed.”
Na zoveel succes heeft Bautista veel momenten om op terug te kijken als zijn persoonlijke favorieten. Tijdens ons gesprek op Phillip Island, de eerste ronde van het seizoen 2026, herinnerde hij zich zijn allereerste WorldSBK-races op diezelfde locatie.“ Ik denk dat de eerste hattrick die ik hier won echt goed was, omdat niemand had gedacht dat ik ze alle drie zou winnen”, aldus Alvaro.“ Vooral na de tests, toen ik snel was, maar niet supersnel. Ik denk dat echt niemand had verwacht dat ik de eerste drie races op rij zou winnen – en daarna elf op rij. Dat eerste moment was heel bijzonder – en het was zo lang geleden dat ik een race had gewonnen. Het was heel bijzonder om dat gevoel van winnen weer terug te krijgen.”
