The 2026 season feels almost like a new era in WorldSBK, so, in the opinion of some top competitors, who was the best of the best in WorldSBK? The best champions, the best overall era, and what is each rider’ s personal high point so far?

With well over 350 WorldSBK race starts under his belt, longtime WorldSBK runner Alex Lowes has got personal experience of a few WorldSBK seasons. It’ s no surprise then that he has chosen his former team-mate Jonathan Rea as the best ever WorldSBK champion.“ I am going to go with JR. The stats speak for themselves,” said Alex.“ In the middle of his dominance, Jonathan Rea, on that Kawasaki, in the prime of both, was the best combination we have ever seen in WorldSBK. I am going to say he is the most deserving champion.”
A favourite era for Lowes is a tricky one to answer, but he went this way …“ I will say that one of the best eras was the Edwards / Bayliss rivalry. Also, I was at the age when I was really getting into watching the racing. Everything is always better when you are a kid, isn’ t it? I have been lucky enough to meet both of those two fantastic guys, great riders, good teams and I have some fantastic memories of WorldSBK. In terms of depth of field, I think you have to say the current WorldSBK era is, in terms of teams, bikes and manufacturer support, we have never had as many bikes in the past four or five years.”
For Alex himself, his personal best memory is his first win, at Brno in 2018, but the second one is when he finished on two podiums, at Donington Park, in 2024.“ To have the podium right there in the middle of the paddock, with all the fans, family, and my kids there, was a special memory.”

Het is dan ook geen verrassing dat hij zijn voormalige teamgenoot Jonathan Rea heeft gekozen als de beste WorldSBK-kampioen ooit.“ Ik ga voor JR. De statistieken spreken voor zich”, aldus Alex.“ Op het hoogtepunt van zijn dominantie was Jonathan Rea op Kawasaki, in de bloei van zijn carrière, de beste combinatie die we ooit in het WorldSBK hebben gezien. Ik vind dat hij de meest verdienstelijke kampioen is.”
Het is lastig om te zeggen wat Lowes’ favoriete tijdperk is, maar hij koos voor het volgende...“ Ik zou zeggen dat een van de beste tijdperken de rivaliteit tussen Edwards en Bayliss was. Bovendien was ik toen op een leeftijd dat ik echt geïnteresseerd raakte in het kijken naar races. Alles is altijd beter als je een kind bent, nietwaar? Ik heb het geluk gehad om deze twee fantastische mannen, geweldige coureurs en goede teams te ontmoeten en ik heb een aantal fantastische herinneringen aan het WorldSBK. Wat betreft diepgang moet je zeggen dat het huidige WorldSBKtijdperk- in termen van teams, motoren en ondersteuning door fabrikanten- de afgelopen vier of vijf jaar op een heel hoog niveau staat.”
Voor Alex zelf is zijn beste herinnering zijn eerste overwinning, op Brno in 2018, en de tweede beste is toen hij twee keer op het podium eindigde, op Donington Park in 2024.“ Het podium midden in de paddock, met alle fans, familie en mijn kinderen erbij, was een bijzondere herinnering.”
