The 4.542km long TT Circuit Assen is a truly historic ribbon of asphalt that winds its unique way around the outskirts of the eponymous town. It also runs straight through the hearts of race fans everywhere. Here we go on a flying lap.

All the old timers ache for the lost north loop section, but the very modern and quite slow first few corners offer the chance for dramatic passes and moments of tension. Four rights( of various kinds) and then an absolute hairpin left make up this quite tricky first sector.

Alle oudgedienden smachten naar het oude, noordelijke deel van het circuit, maar de zeer moderne en vrij langzame eerste paar bochten bieden de kans op spectaculaire inhaalmanoeuvres en spannende momenten. Vier bochten naar rechts en vervolgens een scherpe haarspeldbocht naar links vormen deze vrij lastige eerste sector.

The heavily‘ crowned’ Veenslang corners were moved outward to allow for a bigger paddock some years ago, and a straighter run to the evocative corners of Ruskenhoek and Stekkenwal was the result. Even with modifications this area still feels uniquely‘ Assen’ in nature. The Circuit van Drenthe is a special one for the riders, and no mistake.“ Last year I was lucky to have, for the first time in my life, a victory in Assen,” said Andrea Locatelli, who understood the significance of the stage he took that first WorldSBK win on.“ It is a good track to win at.”

De Veenslang werd enkele jaren geleden iets naar buiten verplaatst, om ruimte te maken voor een grotere paddock, met als resultaat een rechtere aanloop naar de Ruskenhoek en Stekkenwal. Ondanks de aanpassingen voelt dit stuk nog steeds als uniek‘ Assen’ aan. Het Circuit van Drenthe is zonder twijfel een bijzonder circuit voor de coureurs.“ Vorig jaar had ik het geluk om voor het eerst in mijn leven te winnen in Assen”, aldus Andrea Locatelli.“ Het is een goed circuit om op te winnen.”
