Despite some uncertain times for the WorldSBK Championship in its very earliest years , this new upstart global series would not only survive but thrive . In one important way it was actually a smash hit from day one .

It was amazing to see how many hopefuls joined the all-new racing concept as full-timers , or even regular wildcards . There had to be two sets of qualifying groups at many early rounds .
Amazing then that despite this deep crucible of red hot talents the first two championships - not just the first one - were won by the same rider and the same team .
American Fred Merkel - ‘ Flyin ’ Fred to the fans - was the unmissable victor of the first two championships , on the same black and purple Rumi Honda RC30 that has long since gone into history as a metallic icon in its own right .
Merkel may have been relatively new to Europe in 1988 , but in America he had already been a star on the National scene . He had been a Daytona Superbike race winner , a three - yes three - time AMA Superbike champion in 1984 , ’ 85 and ’ 86 , before a fall-out saw him come in various race series in Europe the year after .
Teamed up with Rumi Honda for the inaugural WorldSBK season in 1988 , the blonde Californian beach boy image of Merkel was a hit with the European public from the start . And he took little time proving he would be a championship contender .
