When series leader ( by half a point …) Corser fell in warm-up and punctured his spleen , Slight was the instant hot favourite .
In a straight Honda v Ducati , Slight v Fogarty duel on the same Michelin tyre brand , Slight had some grip issues , in Race One in particular , that saw him eventually lose out to a rider who had once been his friend but ended up as a bitter enemy .
Having come so close so often , maybe we can nail down why Aaron didn ’ t quite become the champion ? A career score of 87 podiums from 229 race starts is a strong showing , but only 13 of those podiums were race wins . Full points were required a bit more frequently than that to beat Fogarty , Kocinski , Corser , etc . But he came close so often .
Aaron was fourth overall in 1999 , still on that full HRC RC45 .
Then everything changed for Honda in 2000 . Although he didn ’ t know why for a long time , it also started to go wrong for Slight . He had a bike that had more or less the same horsepower as his old 750 , but produced around 30 % more torque . Would he finally have the weapon to engage in a truly fair fight with Fogarty and co ?
Yes , he did , and his team-mate Colin Edwards would beat the best Ducatis two years out of three just to prove it .
The problems was that by that point Slight had been suffering from a brain bleed that was affecting his riding , without him knowing it . I would finally need an operation to fix after things worsened and Slight eventually suffered a medical emergency .
For his WorldSBK career , that was that at the end of 2000 , but legends cannot be ‘ retired .’ Slight will always be one of the first names spoken of with reverence when we discuss the earlier seasons of WorldSBK - world titles or no world titles .
