Have you ever experienced barriers due to your race?

Personally, yes, unfortunately. Whether it’s being stopped by police for walking in a residential area late at night, or walking in Tesco with my hood up and being harassed by security or even (my fave I like to tell) running for a bus in Croydon at 14 years of age and the police rugby tackling me to the floor because they thought I was running from them.

Professionally, I’d like to say I’ve had somewhat of a pleasant experience within my career. There has been the “oi mate, your hair is well fluffy” or the more common “what food is that, smells funny”. Naturally there is the culture difference which I suppose all races have in addition to Black people. Other than the subtle remarks which I’ve always shouldered off, nothing crazy.

What is your favourite Black TV talent?

Will Smith (Pre & post slap 😊) – Pre slap - he has always been an inspiration to me showcasing what hard work looks like. Post slap - being able to account for your actions and move on, showing us we are all human.

Dave Chappelle because he uses his comedy to explain real world problems and he’s obviously hilarious.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy the diversity of the tasks. Everyday there is new thing to do. And I’m in contact with people outside my immediate team. And it’s a new role, so I have the ability to make it what I want.

What are your top tips for Black talent in TV to get ahead in the industry?

Work hard

Don’t be sorry for being you! (respectfully)

Standout (you're black so you already got the one up. Be impressionable!

Have fun - if you don’t enjoy what you do. Then don’t do it!
