If you had to summarise Black History Month in one word, what word would you choose?
Extraordinary
What does Black History Month (BHM) mean to you and why is it important to celebrate BHM?
To paraphrase a lyric, from south London rapper Dave’s song “Black” - "Black is beautiful, Black is excellent. Black is pain, Black is joy, Black is evident.”... I think this summarises the growth from struggle to the amazing status black people have today.
It’s also World Mental Health Day in October. What does “Black Health and Wellness,” mean when considering mental health?
I believe this is of great importance. In low economic areas some black men are really struggling with environmental pressures, expectations and personal matters. This is a lot to manage and take in. Hence, mental health being one of the key elements to success.
What comes to mind when I say the words Black Joy to you?
A feeling of comfort and happiness.
What Black creators, organisations, or movements inspire/empower you?
Poku Banks – TikTok Financial educator. Supporting young people with their finances. (Had the pleasure of meeting him and getting to know him).
Black Investor 360 Finance Festival – Brings an average of 3,000 Black entrepreneurs and professionals to enjoy an incredible few days of exploring, learning and excelling your personal & business financial journey through this accessible and inclusive, fun, interactive learning experience. (I was able to attend this in April 2022 and it was a pleasant experience).
Emmanuel Asuquo (The Eman effect) – My friend and mentor. Other than being a financial adviser, Eman does a lot to promote financial literacy and general positive mindset. He’s been able to support me in my career and personal aspects.
