What does Black History Month (BHM) mean to you and why is it important to celebrate BHM?
It’s a really important month and it means a lot to me. My school had a very good history department and we were taught black history from year 8 so it’s always been a big thing to me. It’s a celebration of the rich black history which exists within our society. I do love learning something new every year. Also it’s a bit sad that we have to have it, black history should be far more integrated within what is taught in schools. But overall it’s a really great chance for the celebration of black history and for lessons to be learnt. Which is the important factor in every history which we learn.
What comes to mind when I say the words Black Joy to you?
It’s feeling of pride and happiness when you see Black people succeed and not having to compromise on being Black when being successful in work or happy in their personal lives.
If I am honest, I’ve never been aware of an experience of overt racism or that there has been a block in my career because I’m Black. This could be down to it not happening but it could be down to me not being aware of it. I was actually given my break in television because of an exec who saw me come into a team for work experience which made him realise that they weren’t doing enough to build a more diverse team so he gave me an opportunity to work on that show. This was many many years before the ‘diversity push’ that we are seeing in the industry now.
What is your favourite Black TV show?
Insecure would be my current favourite. Historically I loved The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Desmond’s.
Currently I have a lot of love for Munya Chawaya I think he’s without doubt the nation’s best political satirist. He’s incredibly quick, creative and hilarious. Haven’t seen a bad piece of work from him. I also love Issa Rae as I love Insecure. Ryan Coogler is also very inspirational, being a Marvel fan!
