voyeurism? I think not!
How can the feminist approach be related to my music video?
Goodwin also suggests that there is likely to be the frequent reference of looking and the voyeuristic (pleasure through looking) treatment of women. Another theory which can be associated to my media product due to this is Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze theory. She also suggests that women in music videos are viewed through a heterosexual male’s perspective. An example of a video I studied whilst researching into these ideas is the “Baby Baby Baby” music video by “Make The Girl Dance.” It features footage of naked women walking in public whilst people (including a lot of men) stare at her.
My media product largely challenges these ideas and conventions of real media products such as that one because our female character is shown as being fully clothed and can be viewed as independent and empowering since she ends the relationship. Therefore, this further presents her as a counter-stereotype of this type of music video. This is further illustrated by the fact it goes against Mulvey’s view that women are represented as a sexual fantasy and men are shown as being controlling.
However, we do use close-ups of her, which Goodwin said is another convention of music videos. For example, we included close-ups of her doing her make-up which coincides with Goodwin’s opinions and Mulvey’s view that women are presented as an image. Although, since scenes involving the breakdown of their relationship follow this, it develops these views so that it’s implied women can be both glamorous and independent without needing to please men.
The screenshot above is from the "Baby Baby Baby" music video which features really voyeuristic scenes. Below is a screenshot of my music video showing a scene which could be deemed voyeuristic but in a lesser way.
