convention recap
For my first (in-person) convention, this year was definitely one of my favorite JCL experiences! From waking up at odd hours of the morning to prep for Latin Recitation, having a laughing fit at Certamen Finals, practicing Campaign speeches with other candidates, and the Toga Banquet, convention was overall a blast! The OJCL is truly an amazing community, and I am so happy that I have had the opportunity to experience it. Recognizing all of the skilled JCLers in Graphic Arts, Academics, and Creative Contests really showed me the breadth of talent within the OJCL! I am honored to have served as your OJCL 1st Vice President, and look forward to serving as your next OJCL President!

Convention, like always, was an amazing experience. I experienced many new things like running a colloquium, competing in certamen on the state level, and running for office, which was very stressful. Nevertheless, it was an amazing experience and even though it was a very busy weekend, I made so many new friends and learned more than I could have ever imagined. I cannot wait for next year!

More than anything, I surprised myself at this convention. I never thought I’d have the courage or even drive to run for office, but the warmth of the OJCL community sparked in me a desire to give back. I’m incredibly grateful that I was elected and afforded this opportunity to do so.

As a first-time convention goer, I would definitely recommend! I love how the competitions were so diverse and there was enough for anyone to do to keep themselves occupied, or, like me, sign up for as many contests as humanly possible. My favorite event had to be the LGBTQ mixer where we played a chaotic game of 15+ person UNO; to me, that shows the spirit of convention- no one really knows all of what’s going on, but we’re happy to be there, play along, and ruin friendships with cards.

This year was my first time experiencing a State Convention, and I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations in every way. I don’t know what I thought it was going to be like, but I definitely wasn’t expecting hundreds of kids screaming Latin chants at the top of their lungs. But strange, cult like behavior was exactly what made it so much fun. I had an amazing time, and I can’t wait to see everybody again at Nationals!
