OAPIA Releases Report on Language Access within the AAPI Community
The Report Highlights the 10th Year Anniversary of the Language Access Act
(WASHINGTON,
D.C.) The Mayor's Office on Asian and
Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA)
is pleased to announce the re⁃
lease of 2014: A Language Odys⁃
sey, a policy report looking at
the past, present, and future of
language access in the District of
Columbia and how the Language
Access Act of 2004 has affected
the Asian American and Pacific
Islander (AAPI) community. The
report uses data obtained from
in-language OAPIA surveys and
from various U.S. Census Bureau
surveys.
"Since 2004, OAPIA has
worked more closely with other
District government agencies and
community based organizations to
ensure that the language access
needs are being met for the AA⁃
PI community," said Soohyun "Ju⁃
lie" Koo, OAPIA Director. "OAP⁃
IA will continue to champion lan⁃
guage access for the community
by advocating for and developing
innovative projects and programs
to expand language services."
The report presents the prog⁃
ress of language access within
the AAPI community by focusing
on: 1) the exploration of the suc⁃
cess of the Language Access Act;
2) the perceptions of the AAPI
community's motivations on using
language access services; and 3)
the recommendations on language
access practices in the AAPI com⁃
munity in the District. The pur⁃
pose of the policy report is to ed⁃
ucate policymakers, government
employees, advocates, and the gen⁃
eral public about the effect the
Language Access Act has had on
the AAPI community since the
passage of the act.
"Through this report, I hope
everyone gains a deeper under⁃
standing of the importance of the
Language Access Act and engag⁃
es in future conversation regard⁃
ing language access," said Neel
Saxena, OAPIA Language Access
Coordinator, the author of the re⁃
port.
OAPIA and District govern⁃
ment will continue to ensure
equal access for the AAPI commu⁃

cient (LEP)/non-English proficient
(NEP) populations in the District.
