Mayor Gray Leads Delegation to China to Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Sister City Relationship with Beijing
Trade Mission to Include Opening of Second DC China Center in Beijing
(WASHINGTON, DC) – May⁃
or Vincent C. Gray announced a
10-day trade mission starting
Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, to the
People’ s Republic of China,
where city leaders will celebrate
the 30th anniversary of the Dis⁃
trict’s Sister City Relationship
with Beijing. Leaders will also of⁃
ficially open a DC China Center
in the Chinese capital and partici⁃
pate in other key events that high⁃
light economic development, tour⁃
ism, education, arts and culture.

further the District’ economic-de⁃
s
velopment goals as well as to pro⁃
mote cultural and educational ex⁃
changes by traveling to China,”
Mayor Gray said. “Our three-de⁃
cade-old relationship with Beijing
has flourished over the years, and
will only grow and deepen thanks
to the efforts we will undertake
on this trip – chief among them
the establishment of the new Bei⁃
jing branch of the DC China Cen⁃
ter.”
The District’s Sister City
agreement with Beijing, which be⁃
gan on May 15, 1984, focuses on
arts and culture, technology, edu⁃
cation and tourism. Mayor Gray
is scheduled to participate in sev⁃
eral events during the mission.
Those events include:
• Attending a ribbon-cutting
ceremony for official opening of
the second DC China Center, lo⁃
cated in Beijing. The District
opened its first international of⁃
fice in Shanghai in June 2012.
