We know that you used social media in your new play Poor Thing, can
you tell us more? How were the responses from the audience? It was
the first time we were using social media with such
a high frequency in a single play. It was interesting
because some said they missed the on-stage action as they
were too busy checking the social media, and that made
them reflect on how we live our lives in our contemporary
reality.
But there were also those who were used to multi-tasking, and felt their theatrical experience enhanced because
they could immerse themselves in a reality that was no
different from how they live – one that had both live and
social media going on at the same time. What they were
accustomed to in their reality, they found in the world
of this play. They did not have to switch off their social
media and pay attention to a play. So there were all sorts
of responses.
In our Poor Thing preview in December the audience did not go onto social media to interact with the
characters even though there weren’t any pre-show
