aystar Academy had the privilege of welcoming award-winning
author Mrs. Julia Cook to Beigao and Sanlitun Campus on April
15th and 16th. A highlight of one of the many activities during
April’s Library Literacy Month, her visit was greatly anticipated
and warmly welcomed.
Julia Cook, a parenting expert previously recognized on CNN’s
Headline News, is known worldwide as the author of over 90
storybooks for children and young adults on social and emotional
development topics.
Some of her 90+ titles include:
My Mouth is a Volcano – Interrupting others
The Judgmental Flower – Valuing the differences of others
But It’s Just A Game – Video gaming balance / Digital citizenship

Students at Beigao and Sanlitun campus have been reading her
books for the past two months in preparation of her visit and
were thrilled to meet the author in person. Julia read aloud a
few of her books and discussed with students the implications and
reasoning behind the titles. Addition, she explored some of her
book’s themes through the use of different engaging activities.
For example, Julia asked a student to squeeze out the contents
of a tube of toothpaste and then asked them to put it all back.
This was to metaphorically replicate an insult, demonstrating that
once you have said something insulting to others, you can’t take
it back.
Not only did Julia engage students from K-8, but she also presented
to parents at both campuses. Almost 50 parents in the audience were
enthralled by Julia’s accounts of her own parenting experiences as
well as how to utilize various professional tips and techniques to
foster social and emotional well-being in their children. According
to Huang Ming Yu, parent of a 6-year old student, “Julia gave so
much good advice I almost don’t know where to start. I liked her
so much I bought many of her books.”
A big thank you goes out to Julia Cook and all of those who took
part in her presentations.
