Tools We are Using So Far
FIDS
Core to Riverside’s practice is the FIDS model
of problem solving. It is a simplified version
of the Design cycle.
FEEL: What is the problem
IMAGINE: What is the best case scenario
DO: What will we do to solve the problem?
SHARE: Share the solution with others
so that they can use it.
We use this process to solve many school problems big and small. We also use it in our staff meetings, and
training. We believe that to build a truly healthy school culture, students and staff alike must use the same
tools and be held to the same standards. Only when we are all ACCOUNTABLE can we truly live the ICAN spirit.
Agenda Setting Reflection
Agenda setting invites and challenges teachers and
students to co-create the daily schedule allowing
children to experience both agency in making their
plan and accountability for the success or failure of
that plan. Children on a daily, weekly and monthly basis are invited
to reflect on their choices and learning throughout
a given period. This builds in an incredible level of
accountability into the program. Children who learn
to be accountable for their choices early grow into
adolescents and adults who are also accountable.
Making Learning Visible
Ensuing that we can communicate what’s happening in
the classroom with all stakeholders is an essential step.
Making learning visible in a way that ensures that what
we have learned, how we have learned it and why, are
visible in the environment is another critical tool in
our mission to establish the highest possible levels of
accountability.
ICAN Board
The results of the day are recorded on the ICAN Board.
Successes and failures of the class are both in plan
view for all class members to see. This serves as an
ongoing reminder of what’s going well, and what we
can improve and is another tool for accountability.
We look forward to sharing more with all of you in the
coming week’s and month. Stay Tuned!
