DAYSTAR SANLITUN
into an emotionally charged experience, complete
with tears, anger and cries of ‘not fair’! Throughout
the remainder of the unit, students were able to
recall these feelings and better empathize with other
individuals who became heroes when standing up for
fairness and the rights of others.
As this unit came to a close, students were lucky
enough to make another real-life connection to their
learning when we invited two ‘heroes’ from our local
communities. We had presentations from Lorna, from
“The Migrant Children’s Foundation” and Rebekah
from “Dew Drops Little Flower”. These visitors were
important to our learning because they showed us
firstly, that there are people in our own communities
who struggle to have their basic human rights met, and
secondly, that there are people in our community, just
like us, who are working to support these individuals!
As we reached the end of this unit students were asked
to complete booklet to display their learning. Perhaps
of greater relevance however, is the number of students
who volunteered to give up some of their recess
times to join our newly formed ‘Charity Committee’.
Throughout this unit I felt satisfied that students have
successfully managed to learn from others around the
world, and from others in our local communities. That
students may begin to use this knowledge in their own
lives is inspiring.
