IVY BILINGUAL SCHOOL We, as a community, spent the next few days making animals, Skee-Ball (a classic arcade game), a school bus, cultural masks, musical instruments, spin tops, and more! We then put the crafts and games on display for the family members to see, and the children were overflowing with excitement to share what all they had made throughout the week. As I was walking around with the families, I heard the children talking about the materials they had used to make all of the quirky and useful crafts and games. One child even asked his mom if they could go home and make a bulldozer out of recyclables, and if he could bring it to Show and Tell the following week; a student of mine brought in a bulldozer in which he and his mom had made out of boxes and bottle caps. I strongly believe we are not only to empower a child to become his or her best as they learn, grow, and develop into who they will be; we can also guide, support, and listen to them as they demonstrate what they can do – now. It is now that their talents, ideas, and willingness to explore and experiment can lead them to not only imagine but to do. Children don’t need help with generating the ideas; they need enthusiastic support and positive guidance as they seek to act on their ideas. 23
