The Tamil language is often seen as being in a state of decline
or irrelevance. Commentators highlight how speakers
conceptualize the Tamil language as a mere pragmatic
means confined to academic promotion due to its perceived
irrelevance in Singapore. The emphasis on the diglossia
of Singapore Standard Spoken Tamil (SSST) and Literary
Tamil (LT) taught in schools further exacerbates this
construction of a bleak picture of both varieties of Tamil
language being in decline with LT perceived as unconnected
to SSST. This perspective of current trends however, cannot
be taken conclusively as symptomatic of a decline of the Tamil
Language.
This research paper argues that this heightened
crisis and concern of a decline of the Tamil language among
youth is symptomatic of socio-historical contributors which
also enable individual and institutional actors to negotiate
reconstructions of the Tamil language. The reified
dichotomy between SSST and LT has ensured that
SSST’s monopoly had been relatively autonomous
from the state’s main pedagogic actors. The laymen
bring to classrooms a uniquely homogenous SSST.
In contrast, the state supported classroom Literary
Tamil takes on a “purist” and prescriptive stance.
This very divergence is enabling to SSST speakers.
The enshrinement of LT in the CMIO language
instruction has forced stakeholders in the
Tamil curriculum to engage in negotiating
and giving voice to SSST speakers in
order to reestablish the connection
between SSST and LT. Furthermore,
the socio-historical conditioning of
the Tamil Language as a symbolic
marker for the Singaporean Indian
community has galvanized Tamil
speaking youth and students’ self-reflexivity
on the relevance of the Tamil language. This
paradox of structural essentialism of the
Tamil language with the Tamil speaker and
its enabling potential for her/his increased
agency of negotiation with it necessitates a
thriving reconstruction of the symbolically
elevated Tamil language.
