Tamil language took root in Singapore with the arrival of the
first Tamil diasporic community from South India in the early
19th century as a consequence of British colonisation. A series
of change in the political landscape and educational policies
spanning the colonial and the post colonial period has seen
the Tamil language re-positioning itself in response to these
changes.
Today, Tamil, one of four official languages, finds itself
situated in a unique position in globalised, contemporary
Singapore in comparison with other Indian diasporas. Amidst
a continually changing demographic profile, Tamil, a minority
language, has had to re-invent itself for a younger generation
of bilingual Tamils. Tamil language was to be promoted
and maintained as a living language in Singapore, and
more importantly, this had to be translated into the school
curriculum.
Status and corpus management, together
with pedagogical approaches have been critical
in sustaining interest in the language amongst
young Tamil learners. A paradigm shift seen
in the introduction of Standard Spoken
Tamil (SST), used complementarily with
Literary Tamil (LT) in schools fairly recently,
can be seen as a pragmatic response to the
changing needs of young Tamils, many
of whom come from predominantly
English-speaking homes. SST is
regarded as a variety that has “the
widest communication currency”,
and which is prevalent in Tamil
entertainment media, in both
Singapore and Tamil Nadu.
Although LT is
typically the variety that
is emphasised in schools,
its usage seems to be generally
limited to the confines of the
classroom. Therefore, this paper
will consider the need for SST to be
propagated if Tamil language were to
continue to thrive in Singapore, and
will present some arguments for the
spoken variety to be supported and
encouraged in the school domain
and beyond.
