The Media Development Center was established in 1996
(under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts until 1999), to
play a leading role in the development of an environment
of freedom, independence and pluralism in the media
in Palestine as well as to promote these concepts. Based
on its commitment to the principles of good governance,
respect for human rights and gender sensitivity, the center
seeks to build the human capacity of media institutions,
develop their strategies, raise their professional and ethical
standards and integrate gender into their work, to empower
journalists, work to disseminate media education to various
sectors of non-journalists, contribute to the achievement of
media reform and the enactment of legislation and laws that
guarantee basic media rights.
The Centre also provides vocational training opportunities for
media professionals in the five units of the center: television,
radio, written press, new media, gender, research and media
policies. In cooperation with the Department of Media at
BZU, the Center provides training courses for students and
publishes their written work in its Al-Hal monthly magazine.
Finally, the Center carries out, in its West Bank and Gaza
headquarters, various specialized courses.
