The Institute of Women's Studies was established in 1994,
as the "Women's Studies Program" until 1998, to be the
first institute in Palestine and in the Arab World to award
a master’s degree in gender and development study. In
addition, it provides elective courses in women's studies
for undergraduate students; these courses form a minor

The aim of the Institute is to develop local visions for the
study of gender at the Bachelor and Master level, using
the interdisciplinary approach, and to contribute to the
development of theoretical and conceptual frameworks
using the methods and cognitive techniques associated
with gender analysis. Also, the Institute hopes to develop
the Palestinian research competencies and enable learners
to use feminist analysis tools to analyze and understand
repressive mechanisms with the aim of strengthening liberal
issues. The Institute also focuses on supporting Palestinian
society in gender justice issues, especially social, political
and feminist movements, in an effort to link the cognitive
dimension to practice through in-depth research that
