The Institute of Community and Public Health was estab-
lished in 1978 -- as a unit until 1982, then as a department
until 1998. This institute came as a response to the urgent
need of the Palestinian society for research, planning, as
well as independent health and developmental education
based on well-defined knowledge foundations. The Institute
supports the primary health care as a strategy to develop
health services, where health is defined in its broad holistic
conception, and which incorporates the social and political
determinants of health, and the understanding of health and
disease within their natural context, as a phenomenon with
a time span across the life cycle, not as isolated separate
events at different time intervals. In addition, cooperation
among different sectors is encouraged to promote the
health of the population.
The main activities of the Institute are in the areas of
specialized research in epidemiology, women's health,
health management and systems, child and mental health;
education (master's degree in public and community
health); training; and participation in the development of
health policies. The Institute also includes the secretariat of
the «Lancet» for the health of the Palestinians.
