Muwatin Institute was established as a major unit at Birzeit
University in 2016 as a result of the transfer of the Institute,
the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy, founded
in 1991 in Ramallah, to the university’s main campus, and
the transfer of the Master of Democracy and Human Rights
program- which was under the umbrella of the Graduate
School in 1999- to the new Institute.
The purpose of the Institute is to publicize the democratic
system and human rights, their components, their pillars,
their constituents, and seeks to contribute to the promotion
of knowledge of democracy and human rights and to
contribute to the global dialogue around these concepts.
The Institute focuses on sharpening the energies with the
aim of developing the components of the Palestinian political
system in order to be a lever for the realization of the will
of the nations, especially the Palestinian people. It seeks to
achieve its objectives through education, conducting studies
and research, holding conferences and seminars, workshops
and training courses, producing educational publications,
books and brochures, communicating and networking
with academic local, Arab and international community
institutions.
