Introduction ‫مقدمة‬
When the idea of working on this catalogue materialized, the
aim was to promote and distribute the university’s recent publi-
cations. This job was assigned to the newly established Univer-
sity Publishing Unit, but the task force quickly sensed a higher
and more comprehensive goal, which is an attempt to docu-
ment the written experience of knowledge production at Birzeit
University since its beginning. Thus, this heavy burden was giv-
en to a team, though small in number but is dedicated. Instead
of a few working weeks, according to the plan, work on this
catalogue took seven months and more; the work on preparing
the catalogue was accompanied by the preparation of anoth-
er output, which consisted of building a database of University
publications, including more detailed data than is reflected in
the catalogue. 1 As such, the publications catalogue will be the
first beneficiary of the database, that will continue to be fed
and developed for use in other coming editions of the directory,
and in the management of promoting publications, which have
copies available for distribution. The work on preparing these
outputs was also accompanied by the establishment of the Ar-

The length of work on the catalogue is also explained by the
fact that any publications issued by the University or one of its
units had to be searched at length, in different sources. Not
only has the publication been known, but the working method-
ology has required the screening of several lists (from different
sources), direct access to the publication, scrutiny of its data
and depiction of its cover. Therefore, the unit does not claim
that this catalogue covers all publications of the University. A
number of those publications (which the task team has learned
through one or more sources) were missing to the extent that
they could not be directly identified, which required that these

In this regard, I thank the University Publishing Unit, represented
by its coordinator, Dr. Rashad Twam, for his initiative in putting
forward the idea of this catalogue, and overseeing its preparation
and editing. I also thank the preparation team that has worked
for many months to produce this catalogue, which reflects a
glamorous picture of the university. Also, I would like to appre-
ciate the efforts of the colleagues who have worked to produce
knowledge at Birzeit University. How nice to know that the team
is like the majority of the university community, academics and
administrators, and perhaps most importantly the students who
deserve all respect and appreciation.
