The Birzeit University Museum was founded in 2005 as an
extension and a heir to the founding committee for the
preservation of cultural heritage at the university, which
was formed in 1997. Today, the museum is an intellectual
art area in the heart of the university, seeking to produce
and promote the practice of contemporary art among the
university students and the Palestinian society at large,
through experimentation in the various artistic media. In
its work, the museum relies on interacting with the local
context, thus presenting a unique model of an educational
art museum within the Palestinian cultural experience. The
museum's holdings are more than 2,100 pieces distributed
among the Palestinian fashion group, Tawfiq Kanaan
collection, and the art collection. The museum allows for
the study, presentation, documentation and sponsorship
of the steadily expanding art collection. The acquisitions
of the museum are used as a material and visual source of
knowledge that examines the concepts of history, identity,
heritage and others. The museum sponsors five basic
programs: acquisitions, exhibitions, education, gallery and
virtual gallery.
