Foreword ‫تقديم‬
By reading this catalogue, I was stopped by the title of one of
the oldest eight publications documented, which is “Arab Uni-
versity in Palestine: A preliminary study”, published in 1977;*
In its introduction, it includes the following, “It is more appro-
priate that this [Arab-Palestinian] University does not replicate
all that it does in Arab or foreign universities, but should go
forward adhering to a philosophy linked to the aspirations of
the Palestinian people”. After more than four decades of that
text, Birzeit University has long been so. The reading of the
titles of publications during those decades reflected their na-
tional concern and the philosophy of the university based on

The publication of this catalogue comes as a contribution to
documenting the contents of the knowledge production at Bir-
zeit University over more than four decades. We can see from
the contents of these documents the Palestinian experiences
through the various historical eras, linked to life, and follow
the features of their changes and their resistance to colonial
structures. There is nothing to say about the abundance and
diversity of this production, but the vision and mission of Bir-
zeit University continues to pursue a cognitive path that sim-
ulates the Palestinian reality and to look forward a dialectical
dimension that builds for the future. In the light of that expe-
rience, the trend was towards institutionalizing publication at
the university level. The University Council in April 2018 issued
the instructions for the university publishing and established
the University Publishing Unit, which is not intended to impose
restrictions on the production of knowledge, but to organize
and institutionalize it. The most prominent activity of the unit
during its first year was to document the experience that pre-
ceded its establishment, through the production of this manu-
al and the design of a database for publications.
