Michael and St . George . In 1901-1904 , Chater built his famous palace using the marble stone imported from Europe . The mansion served not only as Chater ' s apartment , but also as a warehouse for the richest collection of Chinese porcelain . In 1902 , Paul Chater was knighted Sir Paul Chater by King Edward VII of Great Britain at Buc-kingham Palace . Chater presented a statue in bronze of the King to Hong Kong , which was unveiled at Statue Square in 1907 . In 1904-1906 , Chater singlehandedly financed the construction of St . Andrew ’ s Church . " This young Armenian from Calcutta filled all of Hong Kong with himself ," the historical documentation notes , " He is everywhere , nothing can be done without his participation . He is the father of Hong Kong ."
His passion for Hong Kong was not the only one : Chater was a major benefactor to worldwide Armenians . Throughout his life , he donated huge sums to Armenian socio-public and religious-educational organizations in Hong Kong , Calcutta , London , Paris , Nanjing and Beijing . In addition , he provided financial assistance to Armenian churches in India , orphans of Armenian origin , built an Armenian nursing home in Calcutta , founded the " Armenian
