Paul Chater ( the birth ’ s name Khachik Pogose Astwachatoor ) was born on September 8 , 1846 in Calcutta ( British India ), in a large Armenian family . As a child , he was baptized in the Armenian Church of St . Nazareth in Calcutta . His father Chater Paul Chater was a member of the Indian civil service and his mother , Miriam , was a housewife . They had 13 children . At the age of nine , Khachik was orphaned and joined La Martiniere College in Calcutta on a scholarship . In 1864 , he moved to Hong Kong , where he lived with his sister Anna and her husband . At first , he worked as an assistant in a bank . Later , with the help of a Jewish family , he joined the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and became a major financial agent . He started trading gold bullion and land plots . In addition , he began to acquire land for the Hong Kong government , which had previously belonged to the British Army and Navy . Paul acquired a large fortune , becoming the owner of large banks , land plots , merchant fleet , and establishing himself as one of the richest men across Asia and most influential figures of Hong Kong . Thanks to him , Hong Kong had occupied a special place in the global economy . In 1868 , Chater and Sir Hormusjee Naorojee Mody established Chater & Mody Company .
In 1886 , Chater helped Scotsman Patrick Manson establish Hong Kong ' s first Dairy Farm , known today as Dairy Farm International Holdings . In the same year , Chater became a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong . In 1889 , Paul Chater and James Johnston Keswick founded “ Hong Kong Land Company ,” which was engaged in the construction and wholesale real estate transactions . A year later , using
