The eldest of the three brothers Calouste Gulbenkian was born on March 23 , 1869 in Scutari , Constantinople , in the family of Sarkis and Dirouhi Gulbenkian . The Gulbenkians descended from the Rshtuni Armenian noble family with the Byzantine title Vart Badrik but with the arrival of the Ottoman Turks , the title was translated into the Turkish equivalent Gülbek in order to escape persecutions .
By 1800 the Gulbenkians had settled in Talas near Caesarea ( today ’ s Kayseri ), where they generously funded the construction of Armenian schools and a new Armenian church .
Calouste Gulbenkian received his early education at the Aramyan-Uncuyan school in Kadikoy . At the age of 14 he was sent to study in Marseille , where he perfected his French , and then to London , where he attended King ’ s College London to study Applied Sciences . He graduated from the College in 1887 obtaining a first-class degree in Engineering and Applied Sciences . Calust Gulbenkian spoke eight languages .
In 1888 , Calouste Gulbenkian travelled to Baku to learn more about oil business and to complete his education . This journey led him to write travelogues and articles for reputable French periodicals . His research was published in the La Revue des Deux Mondes prestigious Parisian magazine .
These publications established his reputation as an oil expert , capturing the attention of the Ottoman Minister of the Civil List , who asked Gulbenkian to prepare a report on

Մինչև 1800-ական թթ . Գյուլբենկյանները հաստատվել են Կեսարիայի ( այժմ ՝ Կայսերի ) մոտ գտնվող Թալասում , որտեղ նրանք առատաձեռնորեն ֆինանսավորել են հայկական դպրոցների և հայկական նոր եկեղեցու կառուցումը ։
