Classification and Naming of Patterns and Motifs The names used for patterns and motifs of this region are deeply rooted in their local weaving literature . Unfortunately many designs and motifs remained unregistered and over time many words and expressions got either forgotten or changed . We have gathered a list of the most important registered names about carpet patterns and motifs of Baluch rugs of Khorasan in the recent decades .
Barg-e-Taki It is a simple and beautiful pattern inspired by grape leaves . In some cases , there ’ s only a simplified motif of the vine leaf which is repeated all over the field , making it a vagireh design . In very rare cases , two ( and in some even rarer cases , three ) trees can be found in the field of the carpet .
Kolah derazi The name is inspired by the name of weaving tribe and the main motif is based on the famous Herati fish which is repeated on the field , making it a vagireh ( repetitive design ). The biggest example of this motif was woven by the Baluch of Khorasab . They used four fish that together make a toranj-like motif in the centre of the carpet .
Boteh ( Boteh-Jeqeh ) It is also known as boteh badami among old Baluch weavers , carpets with this pattern mostly have a repetitive motif of botehs on the field . Sometimes botehs in this type of design are combined with other motifs .
Gol-e-shaftaloo This is another repetitive design that contains one flower all over the field . Motifs of this pattern almost always have the same structure but Baluch weavers sometimes make subtle changes with their own taste and imagination .
Hozi This is the name that the Baluch tribes gave to toranji ( Medallion ) patterns . Toranji is located in the centre of the field and resembles a Hoz ( pond ). A few decades ago some other weaving centres like Chahar-Mahal and Bakhtiyari , Kermanshah and Hamedan used the name hozi instead of toranji .
Gavazni Some of the most beautiful examples of this pattern are found in Khaaf and Sangan . The emphasis is on deer motifs and deers are visible all over the field of the carpet . Gavazni design is a lot like toranji in which a deer is the main motif of the field and is woven around toranji .
